Unified Commerce Platform

stripe design

Our users needed to grok all of these edge cases in order to build a functioning Stripe integration. Imagine the confusion caused by reasoning about these two state machines, with varying definitions of each state depending on the payment solution. Developers must manage the success, failure, and pending states of two state machines—whose states may differ across different payment methods—in order to complete a single payment. We combined the two client-side abstractions we’d previously designed (Tokens and BitcoinReceivers) into a client-driven state machine called a Source.

Stripe Patterns Today

You can mix and match different packages to build out your fleet of devices. Dines believed the best way to streamline operations and reduce the workload for operators was to process all payments through one service. Dines is an all-in-one platform for hospitality businesses across the UK. Stripe Reader S700 allowed users to run a custom POS app such as Dripos directly on the device. Integrate your custom POS app with Stripe Terminal to design a checkout tailored to your business. We did early work on our unified payments API in a conference room named Lynx.

Unify your payment data

stripe design

Its modular and component-based approach allows you to easily add new features or expand existing ones without sacrificing consistency or performance. By leveraging the system’s scalability, you can efficiently adapt your design to meet the changing needs of your users and business. The Stripe Design System offers a range of interactive and feedback elements, such as tooltips, modals, and notifications. Incorporating these elements into your design can enhance user engagement and provide valuable guidance or information when needed.

Atlassian selects Stripe to create a single platform for global billing and payments

If you do create a user interface for your app, use the provided tools and guidelines to simplify the design process. All of Stripe’s payment UIs give you instant access to 40+ payment methods, 35+ languages, and 135+ currencies. — The alternative helmet will be white with a white facemask and two dark blue stripes down the back which will match the all-blue uniform. We focus on the details of everything we do, so businesses around the world can focus on what’s most important to them.

Terminal works seamlessly with Stripe Payments and Connect, with a single onboarding flow to help your users get started quickly. A PaymentIntents integration requires more effort up front, but each incremental payment method requires little incremental work to understand and add. On the other hand, a Charges integration is very low-effort for cards in the US and Canada, but becomes tedious and unpredictable for each subsequent payment method. PaymentMethods, like the original Tokens, represent static information about the payment method that the customer wants to use.

Regularly check the documentation and community resources for any updates or announcements to ensure that your design remains current and optimized. The Stripe Design System leverages code splitting and lazy loading techniques to optimize performance. By dividing your codebase into smaller chunks and loading them only when needed, the system reduces the initial load time and improves overall performance.

Complete sample app

These in-context modules allow the app to meet users in their existing workflows and augment them with contextual information and actions. ContextView allows apps to render next to Stripe content in a drawer, so users can look at them side-by-side and share context across your app and the Stripe content. Active app icon is an icon that represents the currently selected app. If the user has other apps installed, their app icons appear above or below in the app dock. The flexibility to wear 10 different dress combinations are in as the Broncos revealed their new uniform redesign Monday. Everyone at Stripe thinks about creating the best user experience first, then works backward from there.

Layer stripes of different sizes for an easy-on-the-eye space

Upon creation, a Source could be immediately chargeable (e.g., for card payments) or pending (e.g., for payment methods that require customer action). The server-side integration remained a single HTTP request that used a secret key to create a Charge. We describe payments as “finalized” when a user has sufficient confidence the funds are guaranteed. (Of course, even finalized payments can be reversed later due to fraud or subsequent refunds.) In most cases, upon finalization, users release shipment of goods. While payments processed on card networks are initiated by the merchant and can be immediately finalized, these two payment methods are quite different from cards. With Bitcoin, customers (rather than the merchant) determine when a Bitcoin transaction is created.

Use this pattern to clearly communicate the status of a request to users. Each app must have at least one ContextView (per viewport), which acts as the default view when it loads—similar to the index.html of a website). The view determines what the user sees at different points to engage with your app. Stripe Apps provides a range of UI components you can combine to create more complex UIs. Enable your customers to check out in seconds with the optimized Link experience, 3x faster than non-Link customers.

Evenly spaced, this stripe pattern has an elegant appearance that can sometimes be jarring. Stripes are mostly lines or bands woven or printed horizontally, vertically, or diagonally on the fabric. Apart from their position, the way to categorize the different types of stripes is through their sizes and design elements, including color and space. Similarly, professionals began wearing striped suits and ties, while those belonging to the rich society wore stripes as part of their daily fashion style.

All Season Brewing in Mid-Wilshire is geographically central, making it an easy place to bring together people who live on opposite sides of the city. Which might also explain why this place is perpetually packed. Housed in a former car service station, All Season has indoor and outdoor seating, a row of skeeball machines, and a Chicas Taco window out back, so you don’t have to wander far for food.

Hours

West Branch Craft Brewing remains on site, leasing a portion of the rear of the Bull Run since last year. Klinger said a wider selection of the in-house craft brew will be available among the pub’s 20 draft beers. Entrees like baby back ribs and fish and chips remain, soon to include steaks and different seafood. The kitchen’s smoker will become a more prevalent tool as the menu evolves. Providing a relaxed casual atmosphere, feel at home while you lounge by the fireplace enjoying a cocktail (or two) with friends. Try one of the brews from our local Breweries or wines and spirits served by our friendly staff.

Private Meeting space

Any place that sells marked-up bottles and bowls of olives can call itself a wine bar. These 17 spots prove the genre can be a whole lot more. To the side, the dining area, which seats up to 100, will be keyed to attract families for casual dining — with the space between the pub acting as a buffer. Klinger plans some aesthetic changes over the coming months but no major renovations to the dining or bar areas, as of yet. See different dining options below for your Special Events or Small Party needs. Sign up for exclusive promos, new menu drops, store openings, and more.

Between an alleyway and two giant warehouses, there’s plenty of seating. Expect nearly 20 beers on the menu including crisp rice lagers, fruity sours, and a tasty California IPA humorously called the Nose Job. You’ll also usually find some kind of entertainment happening at any given time, from ping pong to pool to the occasional live DJ set.

If you’re looking for a quick drink before dinner, Creature Comforts is a great low-key option. Paperback Brewing has very good beer, especially if you’re a hazy IPA connoisseur, but the biggest reason we love this Glendale brewery is its space. Located in an old 1940s-era airplane hangar, drinking at Paperback feels like you’re in line for Soarin’ Around The World at California Adventure, except the only ride here is sitting and relaxing for a few hours.

The beers here are brewed and poured in cask, which means robust flavors and little-to-no carbonation (it's a little odd to get used to, but quite tasty). For food options, expect a rotating cast of food trucks. There's a solid menu of bar snacks menu with things like burgers and wings to fish sandwiches and kimchi, all way better than they need to be.

They have a wonderful arcade for the kids and a very nice banquet area as well. Highly recommend this place for something as simple as a lunch or dinner or as a rental space. Throwing a retirement party, having a baby shower, or hosting a meeting?

bull run tap house

The massive warehouse tends to be full of 30-somethings gathered to discuss cryptocurrency or watch sports, and there's a great collection of IPAs, lagers, stouts, and sours to carry everyone through the night. There’s no food inside, but there’s usually vendors selling pizza, tacos, and burgers out front. When it’s warm,  take advantage of outdoor picnic tables spread across the astroturf lawn.

As impressive as the space is, the beer is even better. Don’t miss the top-selling Dog Ate My Homework—a purplish, juicy blackberry saison—or Popfuji, a malty, refreshing unfiltered pilsner. If you’ve spent much time in the South Bay, you’ve probably driven past LA Ale Works' taproom in Hawthorne, a few blocks from SpaceX (and right across the street from another solid brewery, Common Space). Ale Works is a good spot to host a party when you don't know how many people will show up.

This all-Belgian brewery in Torrance was one of the first places on the West Coast to kick off the hazy/juicy IPA craze, with every brewery from here to Seattle following suit. Expect a rotating roster of food trucks in the evening, and a large selection of cans available to-go. One of the smallest breweries on this guide, Frogtown feels a bit like you’re hanging out in your friend’s garage, except there’s an industrial brewing set-up instead of an unused homebrew kit. The Lites Out pilsner is ideal if you’re there in the daytime (it’s only 4.1% ABV), but there's also a good selection of hazy and milkshake IPAs if you want to kick things up a bit in the evening. There's usually a food truck on-site most evenings, but you can also bring in food—on weekend afternoons our move is to walk over to Wax Paper right up the block for a post-pilsner sandwich. The giant patio is filled with wooden benches, tree stumps, and metal structures, achieving something that feels like a grown-up summer camp where people overuse the word "dude." Plus, food pop-ups operate most nights.

We also like that the short menu of draft beers is big on IPAs, including the citrusy Figure 8 that you can order by the pitcher. Open since late 2023, Solarc is one of the newer breweries in LA—and one of the most unique, too. Rather than a typical line-up of IPAs and lagers, this Glassell Park brewery specializes in gruit, a medieval style of beer made with bittering agents other than hops. At Solarc, that means beer flavored with things like wormwood, black tea, and turmeric, and fermented with wild yeasts collected around Los Angeles. The whole operation is bordering on being a Portlandia sketch, but there’s no denying that hanging for a few hours in their quirky, colorful space (the walls are literally covered in aluminum foil) is a great way to spend a Sunday.

They also have a smaller tasting room in Culver City right next to the metro. Originally from Georgia, Creature Comforts is a Downtown brewery in the same complex as Rossoblu and Dama. The industrial space has a large interior with plenty of TVs, plus a giant wrap-around front patio ideal for getting a little red on a Saturday afternoon. They’ve got around 12 different beers on tap ranging from Belgian-style pilsners to a sour ale, but we tend to go for the Bigger Dreams, a hazy IPA with heavy notes of tangerine and grapefruit.

The 15 Best Breweries In LA Los Angeles

Head there the next time you’re looking for a place to drink dry-hopped saisons and meet someone with a color-coordinated tote bag. LA's massive craft beer wave of the 2010s has long subsided, but there are still plenty of great places to drink a local pint. But hanging out in an LA brewery means more than just drinking good beer—it's about having a good time, too. From tiny tap rooms in the South Bay to sprawling warehouses in DTLA filled with games and dance floors, these are the 15 best breweries in LA. Casual restaurant with an extensive bottled beer menu and over 40 beers on tap. Family friendly with a children's menu too.Bull Run Taphouse is not only a great place to watch sports, but also a great place to listen to local music.

Homage Brewing is for people who love good beer but also want to dance. There’s a pleasant patio out front where you might spot a couple of toddlers with their tattooed parents. But the real scene is inside the garage, which has a long bar, a disco ball, and (on weekends) a DJ spinning vinyl. Most people come here to sip housemade IPAs and snack on masa-battered chicken wings during the day, but on Friday and Saturday nights, the dance floor is packed until 1am.

Even during peak weekend hours, you’ll always be able to find an open table, and when you get hungry, you’ll find a food truck or two parked out front. If you think you took a wrong turn and ended up in a warehouse yard, you’re at the right place. Boomtown Brewing is the most fun thing happening on this extra-industrial block of the Arts District, and somewhere you can fit a lot of people on a weekend afternoon.

Banquets, catering, private parties, groups, and tour events

This is where you should be drinking hoppy pilsners before a Dodgers game. There are plenty of sprawling warehouse breweries in LA, but Browuerji West in San Pedro beats them all in square footage. This brewery on the docks of Port of LA occupies a WWII-era naval warehouse so large it could host a regulation flag football game. Aside from the huge indoor taproom, there’s a big outdoor courtyard with food trucks and live music on weekends, and a marketplace selling local crafts across the street.

Mayor Judy Wagner recalled the Bull Run Inn, as it was known, and Campus Bowling Lanes had been located across Sixth Street in what’s now Hufnagle Park. Both burned to the ground in 1972 and the bar and restaurant, sans bowling alley, relocated to the present location. That change will come by fall, with Bull Run offering morning meals all week in its dining area off Sixth Street.

In contrast to Bilbao’s approach, Italian architect Piero Lissoni‘s speculative design for a site on New York’s East River takes a different route. Lissoni’s ‘Aquatrium’ is a submerged circular aquarium that offers an immersive experience where visitors feel as though they are entering the water themselves. This design includes a series of eight bubble-like “biomes” hosting sea life from various oceans and seas, and a central iceberg symbolizing the North and South Poles. By night, a grass-topped sliding roof covers the space, turning it into a planetarium, thereby extending the utility of the space and enhancing the visitor experience. They specialize in freshwater and saltwater fishes plus they house a wide variety of aquatic plants and live corals. If you are in search of live rock, you will be surprised to know that they have a wide range of it.

Add-on Experiences for Members

As far as customer service goes, you will feel that every employee is passionate about the work and will make you feel at home. For Ian, it is more of continuous experience and effort rather than just business. He has dived many times just to see the natural environmental behavior to correctly emulate the same environment in his aquariums. ⚠️ Is your fish scratching against rocks/decor, clamping fins, or gasping at the surface? We can provide anti-parasite meds and expert guidance to get your aquarium healthy again before it`s too late. In Los Angeles Aquarium and pond maintenance are essential for keeping your aquatic pets healthy and thriving. By following a regular maintenance schedule, you can help to ensure that your aquarium or pond water is clean and free of harmful toxins, and that your fish and other aquatic life have a healthy and comfortable environment.

They also have a huge assortment of exotic fishes and all the food and equipment that you need to have to start your aquarium. Moreover, aquariums require complex life-support systems to maintain the health of the marine life they house. These systems must manage water quality, temperature, lighting, and other factors crucial to the animals’ survival. As such, modern aquarium design has begun incorporating sustainable system designs to reduce water use and energy consumption.

I drilled a 8mm hole in the side of the ring and inserted the dowel. Once I decided on a length, I took the dowel out and used my coping saw to cut it to length. I then used a 30mm by 20mm length of wood to create the part the object sits in. I used the jig saw to cut this to 40mm and used the orbital sander to smooth the corners off. Using a dremel tool, I then made a shallow dip in the piece for objects to sit into without falling out. Using an 8mm drill bit, I then drilled a 10mm hole into the side of the piece so that it could attack to the 8mm dowel.

Fun Facts about Basketball for Kids You Can Print!

They’re developing some engineering skills and learning some physics by figuring out and comparing the designs and figuring how much force to apply to hit a target. The amount of kinetic energy that the projectile has when it leaves the catapult depends on the amount of potential energy that was stored in the flexible material. The more potential energy that is stored in the flexible material, the more kinetic energy the projectile will have when it is launched. The Lincoln Logs provide a sturdy structure for the catapult and can be adjusted and modified as needed. The distance and speed of the projectile will depend on the tension in the rubber band and the force applied to the lever arm.

Here are some more things we found that we thought you might like. Each of these catapults can shoot small items a great distance! Obviously whether you are playing inside or outside will be a big component of your decision on what to use as catapult projectiles. Tripod catapult made out of marshmallows, straws and pom poms can be made into a fun target game using a paper plate target.

A catapult made out of popsicle sticks is the perfect kids’ activity for simple physics. Marshmallows are everywhere and kids love to do experiment if they get any idea to explore STEM!! In this activity, kids get a great opportunity to build creative catapults using jumbo marshmallows and also they can launch mini marshmallows into the air. This STEM craft is a great learning tool to keep the kids engaged for hours with this little summer science. Also, kids improve their engineering skills while building this marshmallow catapults and explore little science while investigating its function on different sized objects.

It’s an educational activity that illustrates principles of physics, such as energy transfer and Newton’s Laws of Motion. With opportunities to add a mathematical twist, children can record distances and scores, turning playtime into a valuable learning experience. Super Cool Easy Science Experiments for Kids - Learn about Sound

To fire the catapult, load the bucket with a projectile and carefully push the anchor hook out of the eyebolt [15]. Mark spots on the frame and arm where the anchor and eyebolt will be screwed in. Lower the arm, hook it into position [14], and remove the locks. Rotate the dowels toward the front of the frame until the arm presses against the crossbeam [13]. Using the drill-glue-and-screw process, secure the uprights to the frame [5].

Catapult Building and STEM

As children build and test their catapults, they’ll hone their problem-solving skills and understand basic physics principles through hands-on experimentation. It’s a medium-difficulty project suitable for various ages, ensuring an instructive and enjoyable experience for all. Follow the clear and helpful instructions to ensure a safe and exciting science activity that can be enjoyed year-round. Engage your kids in a hands-on learning adventure with the popsicle stick catapult activity from Fun with Mama. This STEM activity encourages young minds to explore the basics of mechanical engineering and physics through a creative and playful approach.

Mangonel Catapult, also referred as torsion catapult was invented during Middle Ages and stood as one of the most popular siege weapons. With this simple activity, kids of high school and pre-school are able to prepare mini Mangonels on their own using simple engineering, math, physics, and science skills. Awesome Peep STEM activity to do with elementary and kindergarten children for Easter and spring holiday vacation.

Use projectiles with different shapes (e.g., spheres, cylinders, or irregular shapes) and observe how each type performs in terms of accuracy and distance. Newton’s 3 Laws of Motion state that an object at rest stays at rest until a force is applied, and an object stays in motion until something creates an imbalance. Discuss real-world applications of catapult technology, such as historical siege engines or modern devices used in engineering and physics research. You will want to use a pair of scissors to make two v notches on either side of two jumbo craft or Popsicle sticks (in the same place on both sticks). Use the photo below as a guide for where to make your notches. I wanted to make them large enough to hold the arm but small enough that it wouldn’t look odd.

Ideal for developing fine motor skills and understanding basic engineering concepts, this craft invites kids to construct two sizes of catapults—regular and jumbo. Get ready to build your Binder-a-pult 2000, a toy that combines creativity with physics for an exciting learning experience. Assemble your tools, follow the instructive steps, and prepare for some high-flying action with your very own homemade siege engine. Remember to handle the hot glue with care and choose your projectiles wisely for safe and satisfying catapult fun. For crafting enthusiasts and curious learners, the One Little Project guide on making a popsicle stick catapult offers a blend of fun and education.

Once I got about half way, I flipped the work over and started to cut one on the opposite side, this meant that I would get no blow out from the hole saw. I cut all the way through the work and using a nut and bold method so that I could place it in my drill, I sanded the surface to eliminate any burs left on the piece. I then used a 20mm forstner bit to get a 20mm hole in the piece and used my dremel to make the hole slightly wider.

They use the energy stored in a flexible material, such as a twisted rope or a bent tree branch, to launch a projectile over a long distance. The energy stored in the flexible material is known as potential energy. When the material is released, it converts the potential energy into kinetic energy, which is the energy of motion. She is fully aware that she does not belong there, everything about it is described in negative terms delineating everything that it isn't versus what it is. It's by knowing where she doesn't fit that she knows to where she might fit.[58] It is similar to the concept of light and dark. We know that darkness is the absence of light, in this case her identity exists outside of this house on mango street. The House on Mango Street Full Book Summary

Meanwhile, during the beginning of the following school year, Esperanza befriends Sally, a girl her age who is more sexually mature than Lucy or Rachel. Esperanza is not completely comfortable with Sally’s sexual experience, and their friendship results in a crisis when Sally leaves Esperanza alone, and a group of boys sexually assaults Esperanza in her absence. After moving to the house, Esperanza quickly befriends Lucy and Rachel, two Chicana girls who live across the street.

By Sandra CisnerosRead by Sandra Cisneros

These three, along with Esperanza’s little sister Nenny, have many small adventures in the first part of the book, including searching through a labyrinthine junk store and learning from an older girl named Marin. While exploring her world, Esperanza experiences the shame of poverty, the unfairness of racism, and the beauty of poetry and music. The struggle for self-definition is a common theme in a coming-of-age novel, or bildungsroman, and in The House on Mango Street, Esperanza’s struggle to define herself underscores her every action and encounter.

She befriends Sally, an attractive girl who wears heavy makeup and provocative clothing, and who is physically abused and forbidden from leaving her home by her strongly religious father. Sally's and Esperanza's friendship is compromised when Sally ditches Esperanza for a boy at a carnival, leaving Esperanza to be sexually assaulted by a group of men. She recounts other instances of assault she has faced, like an older man forcibly kissing her at her first job. Esperanza's traumatic experiences and observations of the women in her neighborhood, many of whom are controlled by the men in their lives, only further cement her desire to leave Mango Street. It is only when she meets Rachel and Lucy's aunts, who tell her fortune, that she realizes her experiences on Mango Street have shaped her identity and will remain with her even if she leaves.

Cisneros has written that for some of the stories in The House on Mango Street – like “The Family of Little Feet” – she started with a title and then had to make a story for it, while the first line of “The Three Sisters” came to her in a dream. Created by the original team behind SparkNotes, LitCharts are the world's best literature guides. The novel is composed of 44 interconnected vignettes, of varying lengths, ranging from one or two paragraphs to several pages.

Minerva, who like Esperanza is creative and fond of writing poems and has children and a husband who physically abuses her. The most interesting moment in her life in that house arrives when all the children enjoy riding the Cadillac of Louie’s cousin but he faces immediate arrest by police for the act of stealing. Esperanza’s great-grandmother, also named Esperanza, is the first of many women who are trapped by men, society, and their own sense of defeat. The elder Esperanza was initially a strong woman, but after her forced marriage she spent most of her days sitting by a window. Windows appear frequently in situations similar to the elder Esperanza’s, suggesting that these trapped women do not accept their cages blindly but instead are always aware of the world outside that is off-limits to them. Esperanza demonstrates her own awareness of the larger world when she observes that being born in the year of the horse isn’t necessarily bad luck, but that the Mexicans and Chinese don’t like their women to be strong like horses.

The House on Mango Street is a 1984 novel by Mexican-American author Sandra Cisneros. Structured as a series of vignettes, it tells the story of Esperanza Cordero, a 12-year-old Chicana girl growing up in the Hispanic quarter of Chicago. Based in part on Cisneros's own experience, the novel follows Esperanza over the span of one year in her life, as she enters adolescence and begins to face the realities of life as a young woman in a poor and patriarchal community. Elements of the Mexican-American culture and themes of social class, race, sexuality, identity, and gender are interwoven throughout the novel.

Everyman’s Library pursues the highest production standards, printing on acid-free paper, with full-cloth cases with two-color foil stamping, decorative endpapers, silk ribbon markers, European-style half-round spines, and a full-color illustrated jacket. Contemporary Classics include an introduction, a select bibliography, and a chronology of the author’s life and times. Esperanza decides she’ll combine sexuality with autonomy by being “beautiful and cruel” like Sally and the women in movies. However, Esperanza finds out that being “beautiful and cruel” is impossible in her male-dominated society when she experiences sexual assault. In her dreams about being with Sire, Esperanza is always in control, but in her encounter with the boys who assault her, she has no power whatsoever. The assault makes Esperanza realize that achieving true independence won’t be possible if she pursues relationships with the men in her neighborhood.

Identity

Along with chronicling Esperanza’s growth, the book’s vignettes also move through brief descriptions of her neighbors. While some of these portraits involve eccentric or memorable men (Meme Ortiz, Geraldo, or Earl), most of them involve women who are trapped in some way. There is Mamacita, who does not leave her apartment because she is afraid of the English language, and Rafaela, whose husband keeps her locked up because she is beautiful. Alicia must stay up all night studying so she can graduate from college and get a good job someday, but her father makes her wake up early to make tortillas and do the chores. Rosa Vargas is imprisoned by the impossible task of taking care of her many unruly children. There is also Minerva, who writes poems like Esperanza, but is already married with two children and a husband who beats her.

It means sadness, it means waiting.”Told in a series of vignettes—sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous—Cisneros’s masterpiece is a classic story of childhood and self-discovery and one of the greatest neighborhood novels of all time. Like Sinclair Lewis’s Main Street or Toni Morrison’s Sula, it makes a world through people and their voices, and it does so in language that is poetic and direct. This gorgeous coming-of-age novel is a celebration of the power of telling one’s story and of being proud of where you’re from.

Esperanza tells her own story through vignettes, each of which reveals a bit more of who she is and who she wants to be. She observes the people around her and reflects on her experiences, but she does not connect them in a way that suggests she understands their greater meaning in her life. She is too young, and too involved, to narrate objectively, and we must piece together her stories. Esperanza matures throughout the novel, and by the end she has gained a clearer sense of who she is.

Esperanza does not have any privacy, and she resolves that she will someday leave Mango Street and have a house all her own. The first few sections of The House on Mango Street suggest that Esperanza will focus on the importance and experiences of her family, but this focus eventually expands. Esperanza’s family and house fill these first few sections, so specifically that Esperanza even discusses the security she finds in the smell of her mother’s hair. However, the introduction of the family is only an introduction to what will become Esperanza’s larger family, the barrio. She may find comfort in her mother’s hair, but Esperanza does not actually mention her mother again for another thirty-five sections.

Esperanza must define herself both as a woman and as an artist, and her perception of her identity changes over the course of the novel. In the beginning of the novel Esperanza wants to change her name so that she can define herself on her own terms, instead of accepting a name that expresses her family heritage. She wants to separate herself from her parents and her younger sister in order to create her own life, and changing her name seems to her an important step in that direction. Later, after she becomes more sexually aware, Esperanza would like to be “beautiful and cruel” so men will like her but not hurt her, and she pursues that goal by becoming friends with Sally. After she is assaulted, she doesn’t want to define herself as “beautiful and cruel” anymore, and she is, once again, unsure of who she is. She sees that patriarchy is prominent in the current neighborhood, where she feels suffocated.

Lucy, Rachel, Esperanza, and Esperanza’s little sister, Nenny, have many adventures in the small space of their neighborhood. They buy a bike, learn exciting stories about boys from a young woman named Marin, explore a junk shop, and have intimate conversations while playing Double Dutch (jumping rope). The girls are on the brink of puberty and sometimes find themselves sexually vulnerable, such as when they walk around their neighborhood in high-heeled shoes or when Esperanza is kissed by an older man at her first job. During the first half of the year, the girls are content to live and play in their child’s world.

When she attends a funeral where the three sisters see her and predict that she’s going to leave mango street. However, her meeting with Lucy and Rachel and their outgoing aunt shows that she has identified herself with Mango Street. As of now, she decides to resort to poetry to escape the situation emotionally but later escape physically too. The novel ends when Esperanza vows to help the residents of Mango Street, for they are very much with her in her memories. As time passes, Esperanza starts becoming mature not only physically but also sexually. She shapes her mindset to become women who do not surrender to a man’s dominance, yet showcases her ability to be an attractive woman to men.

The House on Mango Street Study Guide and Literary Analysis

the house on mango street

The book has sold more than 6 million copies, has been translated into over 20 languages and is required reading in many schools and universities across the United States. Her own hair doesn’t do what she wants it to do, while her sister’s is smooth and oily. Sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes deeply joyous, The House on Mango Street tells the story of Esperanza Cordero, whose neighborhood is one of harsh realities and harsh beauty. Esperanza doesn't want to belong -- not to her rundown neighborhood, and not to the low expectations the world has for her.

Where to Read

Before settling into their new home, a small and run-down building with crumbling red bricks, the family moved frequently, always dreaming of having a house of their own. Pining for a white, wooden house with a big yard and many trees, Esperanza finds her life on Mango Street suffocating and yearns to escape. Esperanza begins the novel with detailed descriptions of the minute behaviors and characteristics of her family members and unusual neighbors, providing a picture of the neighborhood and examples of the many influential people surrounding her. She describes time spent with her younger sister, Nenny, and two older girls she befriends in the neighborhood; Alicia, a promising young college student with a dead mother, and Marin, who spends her days babysitting her younger cousins.

By Sandra CisnerosIntroduction by John Phillip Santos

Eventually, Esperanza decides she does not need to set herself apart from the others in her neighborhood or her family heritage by changing her name, and she stops forcing herself to develop sexually, which she isn’t fully ready for. She accepts her place in her community and decides that the most important way she can define herself is as a writer. As a writer, she observes and interacts with the world in a way that sets her apart from non-writers, giving her the legitimate new identity she’s been searching for. Writing promises to help her leave Mango Street emotionally, and possibly physically as well. Alicia is a hardworking girl who has high aspirations to leave this neighborhood and get a better job so have to study in the morning but her father makes her do the chores. Rafaela, the woman who won’t step out of the house because her husband locks her up as he is insecure about her beauty.

The sentence style suits the vignette style writing as they are short, curt, and concise given mostly in colloquialism. The popularity of the novel lies in this simplicity as it suits the student as well as adult readers. Her dream is about a wooden, white, and big house with a good yard and trees, while this one is suffocating for her.

She puts aside her newfound sexual awareness, rejoins Lucy and Rachel, her less sexually mature friends, and spends her time concentrating on writing instead of on boys. She chooses, for the present, autonomy over sexuality, which gives her the best chance of escape. Esperanza’s newfound sexual maturity, combined with the death of two of her family members, her grandfather and her Aunt Lupe, bring her closer to the world of adults. This second half of The House on Mango Street presents a string of stories about older women in the neighborhood, all of whom are even more stuck in their situations and, quite literally, in their houses, than Esperanza is.

The girl gives a full account of her how they used to live before moving into this house. The reason is that they have been living from one apartment to another apartment as they did not have their own home. The house in this street is the last one on the list of the rented houses though it is not yet as the promised one as they used to think. At school, she was made fun of because of her poverty and frustrated because people couldn’t pronounce her name properly. The House on Mango Street covers the formative years of Esperanza Cordero, a young Chicana girl living in an impoverished Chicago neighborhood with her parents and three siblings.

Also by Sandra Cisneros

The short chapters also reflect the short attention span of a young girl, and this storytelling technique seems appropriate considering Esperanza’s age. Esperanza has not really learned how to tell stories correctly, and she relies on fragments that are grouped together loosely. The chapters are only tenuously connected, and an element of one often triggers another observation in the next. In “The House on Mango Street,” Esperanza complains that the house has only one bedroom, while in “Hairs” she explains what it’s like to sleep in that bedroom with her whole family. Describing her siblings’ hair then reminds her that she cannot talk to her brothers outside the house, and “Boys and Girls” follows. The entire novel continues this way, with both random and not so random connections and logic.

She is utterly desperate to find a man to marry her, to escape the beatings and maltreatment she gets from her father at home. This ‘vicious cycle’ is seen when Esperanza goes and tells Sally's mother that her daughter is in a garden with three boys and the mother completely disregards this, her mother doesn't seem surprised or worried. Her mother cares for her cuts and bruises allowing for the violence to perpetuate,[21] both mother and daughter give excuses to the father.

Gender and Sexuality

As the novel ends, Esperanza vows that after she leaves, she will return to help the people she has left behind. The most popular novel of its time, The House on Mango Street, by Mexican American writer, Sandra Cisneros published in the United States in 1984 and created a trend in new techniques in the fiction writing arena. It comprises vignettes, which tell the story of a young girl, Esperanza Cordero, a Chicana girl of just 12, living in the Latino quarters in the city of Chicago. It also has fetched American Book Award for Cisneros and was later adapted into a play staged in 2009 in Chicago under the name Tanya Saracho.

Aunt Lupe – Aunt Lupe is primarily present in the vignette "Born Bad," in which Esperanza scolds herself for mimicking her dying aunt. She, her parents, her brothers, Carlos and Kiki, and her sister, Nenny, moved to Mango Street when the pipes broke in their previous apartment and the landlord refused to fix them. The family had dreamed of a white house with lots of space and bathrooms, but the house on Mango Street has only one bedroom and one bathroom. Esperanza notes that this is not the house that she envisioned, and although her parents tell her it’s only temporary, she doubts they’ll move anytime soon.

When Esperanza finds herself emotionally ready to leave her neighborhood, however, she discovers that she will never fully be able to leave Mango Street behind, and that after she leaves she’ll have to return to help the women she has left. At the end of the year, Esperanza remains on Mango Street, but she has matured extensively. She has a stronger desire to leave and understands that writing will help her put distance between herself and her situation. Though for now writing helps her escape only emotionally, in the future it may help her to escape physically as well.

Ultimately, Esperanza understands that even if and when she leaves Mango Street, she will continue to take responsibility for the women in her neighborhood. Esperanza observes the people around her and realizes that if not knowing or not mastering the language creates powerlessness, then having the ability to manipulate language will give her power. Her Aunt Lupe tells her to keep writing because it will keep her free, and Esperanza eventually understands what her aunt means. Writing keeps Esperanza spiritually free, because putting her experiences into words gives her power over them. If she can use beautiful language to write about a terrible experience, then the experience seems less awful. Esperanza’s spiritual freedom may eventually give her the power to be literally free as well.

In the final vignette, “Mango Says Goodbye Sometimes,” she says she likes to tell stories, which indicates that she is beginning to identify herself as a writer. Ultimately, she moves toward an understanding of how her experiences have affected her and how they will continue to influence her as she gets older. Over the course of the year Esperanza grows emotionally, artistically, and sexually, and the novel meanders through her experiences with her neighbors and classmates. Esperanza makes friends with two other Chicana girls of Mango Street, Rachel and Lucy.

Esperanza highlights significant or telling moments both in her own life and those in her community, mostly explaining the hardships they face, such as her neighbor being arrested for stealing a car or the death of her Aunt Lupe. She is not only a gifted writer, but an absolutely essential one.” —The New York Times Book Review  The House on Mango Street is one of the most cherished novels of the last fifty years. Readers from all walks of life have fallen for the voice of Esperanza Cordero, growing up in Chicago and inventing for herself who and what she will become.

Meanwhile, she takes to poetry to find expression of her feelings and starts explaining the nature of her family members especially Nenny, her younger sister, who imitates her and her neighboring friends with whom she plays such as Lucy and Rachel. Specifically, Mamacita, an elderly woman who refuses to go out of the house due to a lack of her English speaking skills. Told in a series of vignettes stunning for their eloquence, The House on Mango Street is Sandra Cisneros's greatly admired novel of a Latina girl growing up in Chicago. Acclaimed by critics, beloved by children, their parents and grandparents, taught everywhere from inner-city grade schools to universities across the country, and translated all over the world, it has entered the canon of coming-of-age classics.

Modi and his party are expected to win the election, according to most surveys. On the orders of the Calcutta high court, the CBI had registered three FIRs related to the incidents on January 5. The high court had intervened, instructing the CBI to take over the investigation into several alleged offences in the Sandeshkhali region. These offences reportedly include illegal land acquisitions and instances of violence and sexual assault against women.

Vinayak Savarkar, known as the founder of the Hindutva ideology, arrived in England in 1906 to study law and stayed at India House. He also made India House the headquarters of his Abhinav Bharat Society (a secret radical society launched in 1904). More significantly, India House was also a source of revolutionary literature that was rapidly distributed in India. In addition to the Indian Sociologist, pamphlets like Bande Mataram and Oh Martyrs! A few months later, in July 1905, Varma opened a student hostel and named it ‘India House’. Varma had given radical Indian nationalism outside India a home, right in the heart of the imperial metropolis of London.

Modi accused of hate speech for calling Muslims 'infiltrators' at a rally days into India's election

Prominent London newspapers including The Times demanded that Shyamji Krishna Varma be prosecuted for preaching “disloyal sentiments” to Indian students. Fearing persecution, Varma moved to Paris in 1907 and continued his struggle from there, trying to mobilise support for India in the rest of Europe. His presence became an embarrassment for the French government and he moved to Geneva, where he spent the rest of his life. In its petition to the election commission, the party said that Modi and the BJP have repeatedly used religion, religious symbols and sentiments in their election campaign with impunity.

With the patronage of lawyer Shyamji Krishna Varma, it was opened to promote nationalist views among Indian students in Britain. This institute used to grant scholarships to Indian youths for higher studies in England. The building rapidly became a hub for political activism, one of the most prominent for overseas revolutionary Indian nationalism. "India House" came to informally refer to the nationalist organisations that used the building at various times. All these activities soon attracted enough attention to India House to be discussed in the British Parliament.

They wanted swarajya and were keen on driving the British out of the country, even if it meant using violence. The remarks drew fierce criticism for peddling anti-Muslim tropes, and for breaking election rules that bar candidates from engaging in any activity that aggravates religious tensions. The Election Commission of India’s model code of conduct forbids candidates to “appeal to caste or communal feelings” to secure votes. Sheikh Shahjahan was arrested by the West Bengal Police on February 29 in connection with the attack. After the attack by a mob of around 1,000 people in which three ED officials were injured, a deputy director of the agency had given a complaint to the superintendent of police, Basirhat.

India House, London

The High Commissioner enjoyed the same status as his counterparts from the British Dominions.[5] Upon Indian independence the post was given the present designation. India House is a large Victorian Mansion at 65 Cromwell Avenue, Highgate, North London. Indian House does not record the "fusion" or "world beat" music which has become popular in the past few years.

In addition to questions raised in official Indian and British circles, Savarkar's unrestrained views had been published in English newspapers including the Daily Mail, Manchester Guardian and Dispatch. As a result, articles from The Indian Sociologist were reprinted in the United States in the Gaelic American. Inspired by the writings, Myron Phelps, a wealthy lawyer of Irish descent, funded an India House in New York in 1908. Here, Indian students and ex-residents of London’s India House took advantage of liberal press laws to circulate The Indian Sociologist and other nationalist literature. At the same time, Lala Har Dayal, a student of the London India House, who was in the US, bridged the gap between the intellectual agitators and the predominantly Punjabi labour workers and migrants, laying the foundations of the Ghadar movement. India House was a student residence that existed between 1905 and 1910 at Cromwell Avenue in Highgate, North London.

Old Monk also shows up on the drinks menu in the form of a Manhattan or a Desi sour, which also includes peach liqueur, lemon juice, egg whites, and eucalyptus bitters. He had taken this step very deliberately, in order to attract youngsters to India’s cause. The spirit of ‘non-cooperation’ with the British was implicit in the acceptance of the fellowship. Then, in January 1905, Varma started a publication called The Indian Sociologist – An Organ of Freedom, and of Political, Social and Religious Reform. In the first issue, Varma made the following statement, “The political relations between England and India urgently require a genuine Indian interpreter in the United Kingdom to show, on behalf of India, how Indians really fare and feel under British rule...

Following the example set by the original India House, other ‘India Houses’ were opened elsewhere, including the United States and Japan, although they were not officially aligned to the London one. By the end of the 19th century, Tokyo had a steadily growing Indian student population with whom Varma had been in close contact. TheIndian Sociologist gained prominence here too and an India House was opened in 1907. There was a crackdown on the activities of India House and a number of its leaders left England for France, Germany and even the United States. However, he was dismissed following an alleged conspiracy against him by local British officials. Over the next 12 years, he recorded several thousand traditional songs from tribes in Oklahoma, Kansas, South Dakota, Montana, Oregon, and California. In 1966, with more than a decade's experience studying traditional American Indian composition and performance, and considerable field recording experience, Tony, along with his wife, Ida, launched Indian House.

Many members of the house were involved in revolutionary conspiracies in India. Critics of Modi, an avowed Hindu nationalist, say India’s tradition of diversity and secularism has come under attack since his party won power in 2014 and returned for a second term in 2019. However, the end came for India House came when Curzon Wyllie, the political aide de camp to the Secretary of State for India was shot by Madan Lal Dhingra at the Imperial Institute in London on 1st July 1909. Dhingra had been known to frequent India House and in the aftermath of the assassination, TheIndian Sociologist had published an editorial that did not condemn his actions. By 1909, India House was under surveillance from Scotland Yard, which had at one point infiltrated the organisation via an Indian student named Kritikar.
